State of the City

Annual Report

The Lakewood State of the City luncheon every January always includes the premiere showing of the city's informative and humorous annual report video.

At this year's January 31 event at The Centre at Sycamore Plaza, the theme of the Lakewood CityTV video was a tour bus seeing the Queen Mary and other sights of Long Beach that gets re-directed by space aliens to tour the sights of Lakewood instead.

Secret agents along the lines of the 'Men in Black' movie investigate the situation. And humorous antics ensue, along with the opportunity to talk about Lakewood's achievements over the past year.

After the showing of the video to the 230 attendees, Lakewood Mayor Ron Piazza gave his State of the City address, in which he highlighted some of the 2016 achievements, including:

  • new playgrounds at three parks (Bolivar, Del Valle and Rynerson)
  • new LED streetlights, and
  • a new Sky Knight helicopter with added crime-fighting features.

Piazza also spoke about the "special ingredient" that makes Lakewood such a wonderful community--the thousands of residents who make a difference in big and small ways in their neighborhoods and citywide.

Mayor Piazza's full remarks can be seen here.

Lakewood's Sheriff’s Station Captain Allen Castellano provided a public safety update.

Castellano also talked about the continuing value of the “See Something, Say Something” campaign and how the Lakewood community has taken it to heart.
