'Pickleball' expands to two days a week
The growing sport of "pickleball" is a hit as part of the city's Active Plus fitness activities for older adults. Pickleball mixes the concepts of badminton, ping pong and tennis. It's played on a relatively small court, so lots of people around the country are finding that it provides fun and physical activity but without the wear-and-tear of other sports. Click for short video about pickleball from CityTV.
This fall pickleball goes into action twice a week. This includes Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and every Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on the basketball courts at Mayfair Park.
There's no cost or obligation to try, and no need to call ahead. All equipment, including paddles and balls, can be borrowed from staff at the Burns Community Center (on the southern edge of the park), and Lakewood recreation staff will be available at the courts to show new participants the rules and how to play. Questions are welcome at 562-925-7512.
