Lakewood Run just around the corner

The Lakewood Run returns the morning of Saturday, March 3, 2018 when Sheriff’s deputies, recreational runners, families and kids will gather at the starting line in front of the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station to run the event’s 5K/10K course for time, or do the 1K “Fun Run” or a 5K walk.

“Our partnership with the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station to produce this run has been going strong now for 12 years,” said event chair Michelle Litzinger of Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach. "This is truly a community effort – with lots of families coming out each year."

Lakewood’s tree-lined residential streets provide the backdrop. The flat, “runner friendly” course is “fast” for practiced runners and comfortable for fitness fans and family members. Professional timing will be used.

Mail-in registration is $35 until February 22. Online registration is $35 through March 1. The rate increases to $40 thereafter until the day of the race.

On the day of the event, registration begins at 6:30 a.m. The 5K and 10K runs start at 8:00 a.m. The Fun Run begins at 9:30 a.m.

Participants directly support Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach and Lakewood Sheriff’s Station charity efforts in this family-friendly event.

“Our club members put in countless volunteer hours to organize the run each year because we are passionate about our mission – improving the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment," said Joy Janes, president of Soroptimist International of Lakewood/Long Beach. "The proceeds make it possible to award significant cash grants to help women through job skills training or a college degree. We also offer cash grants to organizations in our community with projects and programs that align with our mission, like Su Casa and the Lakewood Family YMCA Gymnastics program."

The money raised from the Lakewood Run also provides funding for families of ill, wounded or deceased deputies. According to Lakewood Sheriff’s Station Captain James Wolak, “Thanks to this partnership, we are able to support charities like 9-9-9 for Kids, cover our team expenses for the Baker-to-Vegas Relay Challenge Team, and replenish the Friends of Lakewood Sheriff Station Fund that supports the victims of violent crime.”

Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each category of the 5K and 10K running events. All finishers for the 5K/10K will receive finisher medals. There will also be a fitness expo, displays of public safety equipment and programs, and special giveaways from local businesses.
