Memorial Day photos and video now online
The ceremony featured remarks by Mayor Steve Croft and keynote speaker Capt. Don McMackin, US Navy (Ret), and a musical performance by the Lakewood-based Golden Sands Chorus.
World War II D-Day veteran Sam Sachs received a proclamation in honor of his recent 103rd birthday and spoke briefly to the crowd.
Members of Lakewood veterans organizations participated in the event, as did the Lakewood High School Naval JROTC, which presented the colors.
The ceremony also featured the reading of the poem, "The Boys of Del Valle Park," written by Vietnam veteran and original Lakewood resident Dennis Lander. Lander recently passed away, and because he’d been a longtime participant in Lakewood’s Memorial Day program, the city honored him by having his iconic cowboy hat sit on a chair in the front row.
Mayor Croft pointed out the recent enhancement to the Veterans Memorial of pilot and radar operator mannequins in aviation gear placed inside the jet plane.
