School Safety Program

The City of Lakewood sponsors a School Safety Program which teaches pedestrian and bike safety to school-age children. Suggested Route to School maps are the key to keeping youngsters safe when they walk or bike to school. The maps have easily understood symbols to show where crossing guards, traffic signals, and stop signs are located.

Afterschool programs at Lakewood parks

Lakewood's clean, safe parks overseen by trained recreational staff offer afterschool supervision for school-age children, teens and preteens. Kids can check out art supplies and sports equipment for their self-directed activities. Special programs are offered during school holiday vacation periods.

Libraries

Lakewood is home to two Los Angeles County libraries:

Angelo M. Iacoboni Library (562-866-1777), a regional-sized facility at over 21,000 square feet, located in the Lakewood Civic Center at 4990 Clark Ave.

Angelo M. Iacoboni Library was founded in 1954--the same year that Lakewood officially incorporated as a city. Originally the library was located in the Faculty Shops in Lakewood Center near what was then the City Hall. The library moved to a larger building in 1959 and was rededicated in 1965 as the Angelo M. Iacoboni Library, after Lakewood's first mayor.

George Nye, Jr. Library (562-421-8497), which encompasses 7,100 square feet, is located at 6600 Del Amo Blvd.

George Nye, Jr. Library opened in 1973, an effort of the City of Lakewood in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles Public Library. The library is named for Lakewood Mayor George H. Nye, Jr. who died while serving in office in May 1971.   The library is the second in the city and serves the population of the eastern area of the city which includes eight elementary schools, a middle school and a high school.

An active Friends of the Library group was formed in 1972 and helps support both libraries. They regularly hold used-book sales offering terrific bargains with proceeds helping the local facilities.
