Juneteenth: StoryWalk®

Cartoon children around large book on the grass with Juneteenth Storywalk text

Please join us for Lakewood's Juneteenth StoryWalk® on Saturday, June 22 starting at 1 p.m. outside Iacoboni library, 4990 Clark Ave.

No registration is required.

This year, in honor of the holiday and in the spirit of celebrating equality, diversity and inclusion, the City of Lakewood has partnered with Iacoboni Library in co-hosting a special outdoor event on Saturday, June 22.

The StoryWalk® engages families in a walk around Lakewood’s Civic Center reading pages from a young children’s Juneteenth book displayed in a unique manner.

The family-focused event begins at 1 p.m. and features:

  • A brief program with Lakewood City Council members.
  • Light refreshments and treats (while supplies last) featuring the delicious, made-from-scratch desserts from Black-owned Coco's Lip Smacking Cupcakes.
  • Giveaways and prize raffle.
  • Self-guided StoryWalk® that enables families to enjoy the displays at their own pace until 6 p.m.

NOTE: This event will be held entirely outdoors on a summer afternoon, with the StoryWalk® path set up on grass, so please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.

StoryWalk® was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont.

While library staff will engage with guests on the walk until 2 p.m., the StoryWalk® display will remain up until 6 p.m. and is designed to be self-guided.

Other Juneteenth activities at Iacoboni Library

Are you looking for a Juneteenth activity aimed at slightly older kids? Teens aged 13 – 17 are invited to Iacoboni Library on June 18 from 4 to 5 p.m. to learn about the history of this long-celebrated holiday and tap into their creativity by designing a Juneteenth bumper sticker expressing their thoughts, feelings and messages of empowerment. Registration is required.

The library will have book displays commemorating Juneteenth for children, teens, and adults.

Please note, all L.A. County Library branches will be closed on June 19 for the holiday, but an abundance of Juneteenth-related resources and multimedia options can be found on LACountyLibrary.org/celebrate-juneteenth.
