Volunteer Day

Group of volunteers on Volunteer Day

One of Lakewood’s enduring traditions is Volunteer Day, when residents of all ages come together to help their neighbors in need.

In 2024, Lakewood celebrates 27 years of this tradition to make our community a better place.

What is Volunteer Day?

Volunteers, both individuals and groups, come out to work on a variety of clean-up projects at private homes, schools and parks.

The City of Lakewood staff will develop the work plan, assign the work to each volunteer group, provide a dumpster on site and select materials.

Types of volunteer work

Volunteers will do outdoor tasks, like light painting and general yard cleanup, and planting flowers.

Want to volunteer?

  • You can volunteer as a group or an individual. Volunteers must provide their own tools and work gloves.
  • Volunteer groups should consist of about 10-20 individuals. Each group will choose a site captain to serve as the group's contact with the City of Lakewood.
  • Site captains are required to attend a meeting on Wednesday, April 3 at 5 p.m. at the Burns Community Center.
  • All volunteers are invited to a celebration lunch at the Lakewood Youth Center after Volunteer Day work is complete.

What about children?

Children are welcome to help, however, groups with children should have an adult-to-child ratio of 1:10.

Project Sites

Project sites must be located in Lakewood.

Special consideration will be given to residents who are not physically able to do yard work, or cannot afford to complete the work themselves.
