How to register for Project Shepherd backpacks

Each year, Lakewood Project Shepherd accepts donations of new backpacks and school supplies to distribute to low-income Lakewood families in need.

If you are a Lakewood resident facing tough economic times, you can apply for a free backpack for your children ages 3 to 18 (preschool through 12th grade) through Monday, July 29. 

Backpacks will be distributed to registered families the second week of August. 

Eligibility requirements

  • Lakewood residents only with children attending pre-school through high school (ages 3 to 18).
  • Those who are low-income, unemployed, or facing economic hardship.

How to register

  • Call the Burns Community Center at 562-925-7512, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Bring your current utility bill (water, gas, electric) or government award letter showing your Lakewood address when you arrive to pick up a backpack.

How to donate

New backpacks and school supplies appropriate for all ages will be accepted at Lakewood City Hall during regular business hours or at the Burns Community Center at 5510 Clark Ave. from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. 

Please deliver your donation no later than Monday, July 29.
